Prompto/Any, or Gen, Songstress!Prompto
Date: 2017-02-09 03:30 am (UTC)One (or some? all?) the chocobros notice that whenever Prompto sings they feel different but a good different. They're more focused, feel stronger, more aware-but it never lasts for long since he only sings short tunes. Then one day one of them decides to test the theory then BAM Prompto's voice carries power

FILL: 1/5 Prompto/Any, or Gen, Songstress!Prompto
Date: 2017-02-09 11:36 pm (UTC)--------------------
They were surrounded, but Ignis wasn’t worried. This wasn’t the first time were they had to fight their way out. While he saw Noctis dash towards the enemie soldiers, he adjusted his glasses and started to analyze their situation. They were in an open field, the reason the magiteck engine had been able to unload a whole battalion of soldiers, ready to fight.
Gladiolus was already in the heat of battle, slashing everything that came towards him, with a grim expression on his face. Ignis could hear Prompto’s signature phrase, „Oh, hi there.... opening“, before a gunshot rang out and the magiteck soldier fell back lifeless. After he found his own opening, he used his daggers to finish the soldiers off. „Ignis, WAIT!“ he was not able to turn around, but he could feel the pain on his right side, as a blade cut through his side. Not caring, he finished his enemy and went back to regroup, watching Gladiolus and Noctis round the last two magiteck soldiers up.
„Iggy! You ok, buddy?“ was said next to him, as Prompto had made his way next to him. Ignis felt tired, but well enough and assured Prompto that he would be fine as soon as they got to the campsite. He could see Prompto’s smile and could hear Noctis shout that they’ve got all of them. Ignis watched Prompto do a small victory jump and turned around to watch the others return and check their injuries. Prompto then hummed his victory tune, Gladiolus laughed it off while Noctis laid a hand on Prompto’s shoulder... and Ignis... Ignis felt less tired than before.
His cut was still hurting, but less so, as if he had taken something against the pain. „Iggy?“ Gladiolus asked, „let’s get this cut wrapped up, I’m not sure if we have any potions left...“
The next Haven hadn’t been that far away, but Ignis could feel the pain worsen again, knowing that they truly were out of potions. His changing condition was something he would never have complained about, but made him curious. Both Gladiolus and Noctis were fine, Noctis chatting with Prompto and Gladio watching him with care. Ignis took the pain in stride and as they finally arrived at their Haven he let out a small sigh of relief.
„Don’t worry, Ignis. You don’t have to cook today, I’ve got it.“ was the last thing he heard from Gladiolus before he went to check their rations. That was how they all ended up having cups of noodles for dinner. While Gladio had prepared their dinner, Noctis went out of his way to get Ignis some nice covers, since he was the only one injured. Something he had tried to keep from happening, as he couldn’t just take all their cushions – his injury wasn’t even that bad – and Prompto had been slowly bandaging his wound. Ignis did feel better already, he could smell the noodles cooking, was able to see Noctis searching their tent for even more cushions, and was able to hear Prompto quietly humming while he was working on Ignis injury.
Ignis sighed again, this time feeling much better. The pain was almost gone. Smiling gently, Prompto suddenly stopped his humming. „You feeling better, Iggy?“ He nodded slowly. „I’m glad!“ Prompto replied, still smilling. Then there was a sudden impact as Ignis watched Prompto getting hit with a cushion.
„Oh, YOU’LL REGRET THAT, NOCT!“ Ignis heard the other shout before he ran after Noctis, who was laughing not too far back now.
As Ignis watched them fight, slowly the pain started to fade back in. „Those two are worse than children.“ He heard Gladio mutter, but there was a smile visible on his face. „Hope you’re feeling better, Iggy.“ He said, before handing him over his cup of noodles. With the pain back, Ignis also started to feel tired again, though his cushions were now ammunition. „Aren’t you supposed to protect our young king?“, Ignis asked with a light smile, as Gladio shook his head. „He’ll show Prompto.“ Ignis leaned back as good as he could, there was no movement next to him. Both content they watched the others continue their fight until Noctis had to call quits because of hunger. „YOU QUIT, I WIN!“ Prompto shouted, before he repeated his own victory tune.
This time Ignis noticed that the pain lessend in time with Prompto. Something that would not have bothered him, if he were someone else. However, since he was not someone else. he tried to remember the other instances were he felt better. They were in no way enough to clearly state any corelation between the two instances, but it intrigued him.
So when Prompto sat next to Gladio and Ignis, finally eating his own dinner, Ignis took the initiative.
„When you were wrapping up my injuries, you were humming.“ Prompto did not stop eating or react in any way differently. „Oh, was I?, he had said, before taking another bite, „I don’t recall.“
„Oh, but you did, that was how I was able to hit your head so easily.“ Noctis mentioned, while he tried to check his cup for any hidden vegetables. „Really? Hmm.... I think my mom used to hum? I’m not sure though, I would have been rather small.“ Prompto said. Shortly afterwards they all went to bed, trying to keep enough space for Ignis to not agitate his injury further.
Ignis was the last one to fall asleep, trying to get it into his head that Prompto could use his singing voice as a painkiller.
Prompto’s singing voice definitely worked as a painkiller. After his initial injury Ignis started to focus more on Prompto and his small bursts of humming or singing. He noticed that those moments were kept rather short, but were happening more often than he would have though at first. Prompto hummed after battle and he started to feel more refreshed. He heard Prompto humming a sonng while riding a chocobo and he was sure that Prompto’s chocobo gained on speed. There were all those instances where Ignis felt more refreshed and fitter, or the pain from an injury similar to what had happened with the magiteck soldiers lessen while Prompto was humming a weird tune. It couldn’t be coincidence.
Ignis knew that no one would believe him. He had to know for sure. That was the reason that Ignis turned on the radio in the Regalia after 35 hours of being awake. They were all tired. They had been on an ore search for Dino, which had taken longer than anyone had thought.
Gladiolus was already asleep, he had been fighting a lot and the exhaustion and the stress were clearly visible. Noctis sat in the backseat, trying to keep his eyes open, in case anything was about to happen. All the while Prompto sat in the front seat next to Ignis, watching Ignis curiously.
Ignis himself had trouble keeping his eyes open and the radio wasn’t truly helping. There was nothing on there that was catchy enough to catch the attention of anyone. Sighing he considered just stopping the car and getting to a motel when an idea came to him.
„Remember when I got you to push the car after it broke down?, Ignis tried to hide his smile. „I remember!“ He heard Noctis groan and Prompto gave a small nod. „It was really hot that day.“
Ignis was still paying attention to the road, starting to feel more and more sore. „Remember the song that was playing?“, there was a short moment of silence before Prompto answered. „Yes, that was nice...“
Ignis took this as his cue and started to copy the melody. He was still driving, but offering a small tune. He heard the laugh next to him, but shortly afterwards he was able to hear the words leaving Promptos mouth.
„When the night.... has come. And the land is dark.“
And as he continued to provide the beat, he heard Noctis join Prompto. Ignis could feel the tiredness leaving his body and he was able to hear the energy in both Prompto’s and Noctis’s voices. From the mirror he was able to see some stresslines lessen from Gladiolus face as they drove ahead, in the night, with Prompto singing in the car.

----------
It took Gladiolus longer to notice any changes, but when he did, he was genuinly confused. While they used to drive without any music, usually to be able to hold an easy conversation, he noted that Ignis was often buying CD’s in shops and playing them during longer car rides. When he had asked Ignis, the other just said that the music would help him focus. His lazyness as well as Prompto didn’t mind though, as they happened to enjoy listening to some weird soundtracks and making up their own lyrics to it. It was not that Gladiolus minded this change, he was just not used to it. However he could not complain about it, as he realised that even he felt better after a long drive in the car with music playing in the background.
Gladiolus was not used to this. After they had taken another long ride with the Regalia, it was time to take a break and refill their fuel.
„I guess it’s time for another hunt, to get some Gil ready. Right, Iggy?“, since Ignis was the most perceptive out of them all, even he tended to ask him first. Ignis nodded and motioned to him and the others to get out of their car. „Yes, it would probably be for the better.“ Ignis turned to the other two boys, who were currenty playing Kings Knight and hushed them out of their car.
„Get out now. We need to hurry up, before night falls.“, Prompto, who nearly jumped out of the car, gave him a smile. Gladiolus was able to hear Noctis slowly getting up. „Why don’t you go and ask around a bit Iggy. We’ll set up the car, so that it’ll be ready when you get back.“, satisfied with that setup, Ignis gave him a sharp nod before leaving.
„Noct, get your car ready, and stop moping around.“
„Sure.“
Noctis started the usual routine, while Prompto watched with interest. „You sure, you’re ok?“ Gladiolus asked Prompto, as he walked next to him. „Yeah“, Prompto answered, „just like watching Noct do all the work.“ That gave him a small slap on the back from Gladio and a loud indignified shout from Noctis. Prompto didn’t mind, he gave his usual grin before he put his attention back to Gladio. „So... we’ll get to rent some Chocobos for the hunt, right?“ He asked, looking already exited. Gladio could only shake his head. „I’m not sure, depending on how far away our target is stationed and depending on what Iggy thinks is the best course of acti...“ ,he got interupted by Prompto „but Chocobos!“.
Gladiolus repeated the fact, that it all depended on more than one fact; that they also needed to ask Iggy, for example. However, Prompto didn’t really listen.
„I want to ride a Chocobo all-day.“ was the last thing he heard before Prompto just hummed the Chocobo tune.
Gladiolus turned around and left them both alone, walking up to Ignis, who was currently talking to a vendor outside Kenny Crows. There seemed to have been a small debate going on, but Ignis left the vendor feeling happy.
„You got what we needed?“ Gladiolus asked. Ignis nodded, giving a small smile, before continuing „I was even able to find something else.“ Gladiolus pinched his nose. „Please don’t tell me you bought even more music. Don’t you think we should spend our Gil in a more safe manner?“
Ignis did not look disappointed in his lack of interest in music, but he seemed to consider something.
„I was able to gain access to this MP3 player, I think Prompto might like it, as he enjoys our new music the most.“ Ignis was smiling, as if he had done something really smart. Gladiolus felt left out.
„Iggy. Tell me, I’m not used to you spending this much on something that is not needed!“
„But I do think that we could need it.“ Ignis said, before he started walking towards Noctis and Prompto, who were done with the car and ready to leave. „So chop-chop, we have to get some hunting done.“
Their hunting trip didn’t take too long, but in the end, they were too far out to get back to their car. As night had fallen, they decided to go on another Haven to rest. It didn’t take long to find a good place for their tent. Gladiolus was cleaning his weapons, glad to have been able to save his friend from a bad blow to the head, while Noctis was watching Ignis cook. Gladiolus was watching Prompto, who had a big smile on his face since Ignis presented him with the MP3 player.
Gladiolus had heard how Prompto told Ignis, that he never had one of those, and that he would guard it with everything he had. He thought it was adorable how happy Prompto got from something as simple as an MP3 player. Ignis had promised Prompto to get him some music and Noctis mentioned that he could probably find a Chocobo themed case for it. After their dinner was done, Gladiolus retreated into the tent to get some needed sleep, while the others were all setting up Prompto’s new equipment.
It took Gladiolus another morning out camping before he was finally able to connect the dots. He was doing his usual morning routine, doing push-ups, his morning run and whatever exercise he seemed to need, when he heard Prompto leaing the tent with his MP3 player on and humming softly.
Gladiolus felt fresher than before and the feeling didn’t leave. He continued doing his push-up routine, feeling as if he could break his old record. He was able to see Ignis give him a small nod as he watched after Prompto.
„It helps you focus?“ Gladiolus asked Ignis. There was another small nod. „You know why?“ There was no answer.
„Prompto!“ he heard Ignis say, as Prompto stopped humming and turned around confused, only now realising that the others were already awake.
„Oh sorry, I’ll stop if it’s bothering you.“ He said awkwardly. „Don’t worry about it. I was about to ask you if you could help Gladiolus with his routine, since I wanted to check on a few plants near here.“ Prompto looked confused. „Whatever shall I do?“
That was how Prompto ended up sitting on Gladiolus back, while Gladiolus was doing his push-ups. While at first Prompto seemed to be afraid to do something wrong, he soon started to relax and as he was again focused on his MP3 player, the humming started again.
Gladiolus was sure, that Ignis had been right.
Somehow Prompto helped them focus.
After he was done and Prompto got up, Gladio held him back. „Thanks buddy, you were a great help. You know that?“
Prompto blushed. „Stop it. That was nothing.“
„I’m still glad you’re here. It would not have been the same without you.“
At that Prompto wasn’t sure what to say. „He’s right, you know.“ That was Iggy.
„You’re an important part of our team, and we don’t seem to tell you enough.“ There was a moment of silence and Prompto looked like he was ready to cry.
Gladiolus managed to get a grip on both Ignis and Prompto, and they settled for a big hug. He felt Prompto tremble slightly under him.
„You ok?“, Gladiolus asked.
„yeah“, he heard Prompto mumble. „I’m just glad, that I know you guys.“
It was a moment of silence, there was no music around, no humming. But it was fine. Because even though Prompto’s singing might help them focus, it was his character that made him what he was. Gladiolus was sure to keep that in mind.

------------
They had already arrived in Altissia when Noctis had finally found the time to think about it.
He still felt all the excitement bubbling in him, knowing that he was finally able to see Luna again. However, there was something else in his mind or, to be even more precise, someone else.
Prompto.
Noctis was alone in their room that they were able to purchase, in The Leville, and he was waiting for his friends return. Though this gave him the time he had needed. It was weird thinking about how long they had been traveling on the road together, meething all those interesting people. He shook his head slightly, it was always better to think about the good times he had instead of thinking what he had lost.
His home was gone.
He would never be able to come back.
He could have died more than once, either during a hunting accident or all those instances where a Magitek Engine had managed to track their moves. At the same time he had had one of the greatest trips in his life. His father's car at his side, being together with his friends...
Noctis remembered the music. It had been a sudden change, not even half into their trip, but one, they all agreed, for the best.
Being able to release some stress, or just having fun, singing and humming in the car or in the mornings became their routine. Noctis had to surpress a laugh, remembering Gladios singing, after Prompto had offered him some photos that he could send Iris. Gladiolus hadn't managed to sing the whole song without breaking a sweat and even Ignis sweared that it took more out of his sworn shield than any training could have done.
Noctis, who was still sitting on his bed in the hotel room, quetly turned around. It had always been Prompto who seemed to humm the loudest, or be their lead singer. It seemed natural, Prompto was happy and enthusiastic and it showed. Noctis could have sworn that even his voice alone improved all their moods. Today, Noctis was sure, he'd finally find out if it was true.
That was why he waited. That was why he told both Ignis and Gladiolus to take their time on the marquet. He didn't say it like that though. He might have mentioned that he wanted a certain treat for desert today and he is sure that Ignis took Gladiolus with him to threaten every vendor who could sell the ingredients.
"Noct?", there was a nock on the door. "Prompto, come on in.", the door opened and the blonde went inside, regarding Noct with a curious glance.
"Did you seriously ask Iggy to get you Ulwaat Berries here in Altissia?"
Noctis nodded. Prompto groaned.
"He won't be back until tomorrow! What about Gladiolus sweet sleep schedule? What about my wish for something eadible for dinner?!" Prompto exclaimed while he sat at the opposite side of Noctis. Noctis gave him a small smile. "You know that they'll be fine.", he stopped, unsure if he should continue.
Prompto didn't seem to notice how tense Noctis was, as he went through the pictures on his camera. Noctis realised that this would probably be his last chance, he knew Prompto kept some secrets, but this? This couldn't be that bad.
"Prompto, can I ask you a question?", Noctis was sure he felt the significance of this silence. He would finally be able to.....
"You already did." Noctis was sure, that Prompto was a dickhead. "Shut up", there was a laugh. "Sorry Noct, ask away. Your humble friend awaits your next question."
Noctis deflated. He was not sure if he could go through with this now. Not with Prompto being like this. At the same time though, Prompto seemed to notice, that this was seemingly something important to Noct.
"Dude, it's fine. I'll listen. What's the matter?", Prompto sat up, finally truly catching Noctis expression.
"I wanted to ask you about your interest in music.", he stopped, considering his next move. "I mean... I noticed how both Iggy and Gladio tried to get you more music. I saw you care for your MP3 player and sometimes humming even louder when we were having a bad day. Please, don't think that I'm an idiot... but is there something special in relation to music with you?" he ended up mumbling the last part, blushing slightly. Prompto still paid attention.
"Oh, that." Prompto finally managed, "Yeah. Trust me, it's weird... but yeah. Somehow my voice helps other people. I'm not exactly sure how it works.", there was again a small pause. "I told Iggy once, that my mother used to humm to me. I think this is true. My mother always liked music, that's the only thing I truly remember of her."
Noctis realised that Prompto's voice was cracking, he was holding his hands together, probably unsure what to do with them.
"I noticed this effect when I was little. My foster parents were always excited having me in the same room as them when I was humming. They were able to work better, or so they told me." Prompto sighed.
"I thought, that maybe at least like this I could earn my keep here, you know?"
Noctis head stopped working. He shook his head, confusing Prompto. "Stop this train of thought." Noctis told Prompto.
Prompto gave him a small smile. "It's nice to be useful even outside of a ranged battle, you know?" Noctis took Prompto's hand. "Stop this." he repeated. Prompto's smile turned into a frown.
"What?"
"You don't have to do anything like that, you know? Iggy and Gladio should be telling you more often than not that you don't have to do more than just be yourself, right?" This was important. Noctis knew that Prompto struggled with the concept of being worth-while. Something that broke Noctis heart. Ignis as well as Gladio were always telling him that he should pay more attention to Prompto's feelings. Prompto seemed to currently consider Noctis's words.
"They did tell me." Noctis heard the other mumble, "It's just... I like helping you guys. It's part of me as much as you are my friend."
Noctis, still holding Prompto's hand, softly pressed it and holding it steady. "I would not want it any different. You are the one who kept me going after all that happened. I trust you."
Prompto smiled.
"You're such a big hearted fool, Noct."
"And you are my beautiful songstress, Prompto."
The cushion that shook Noct, made him smile even more than the indignant "Singer!". He steadied himself for a longer fight, "You won't win this round, Prompto!"
When Gladiolus and Ignis made it back to the Leville, they found both their Prince and future king lying on the ground on several pillows, that were emitting feathers, smiling softly and seemingly asleep. On the bed however was Prompto, still awake, softly humming a Lullaby.
Noctis was dreaming peacefully, knowing that he had always Prompto, Ignis and Gladiolus on his side... and they.... they were able to do anything they wanted.
Then the Hydraen happend. Ignis lost his sight, Luna died and Gladiolus wanted him to wear his father's ring, probably not understanding what it meant. Even Prompto lost lots of his enthusiasm, as he was unable to help Ignis more than just lessen parts of his pain.
And then...
And then the music stopped completely.
Because Noctis pushed his only true singer of the train - and right into Ardyn's clutches.

Date: 2017-02-18 03:17 pm (UTC)FILL 4/5 Prompto/Any, or Gen, Songstress!Prompto
Date: 2017-02-19 09:11 pm (UTC)However, this chapter was a lot harder to write and didn't really get where I wanted it to go. When I took the prompt I thought of a four times + story, something like that and I just wanted to get all the chocobros a chapter (and Ardyn) So yeah we've had Iggy, Gladio, Noct and now our favourite Trashbag. Second to last chapter, hope this is still going.
-----------
It didn’t take more than a day to bring Prompto to Zegnautos Keep in Gralea. Ardyn carefully watched the blonde, who hadn’t moved a muscle since he had hit the ground after he got pushed from the train. Ardyn, if he had still worn his Prompto-guise, would have pat himself on the back for this one, however, since he was just wearing his casual attire, he merely acknowledged his own genius. He could see the traces of her in this little MT, in how the freckles were strategically placed similar to hers, the eyes still shaped like hers. Even unconscious their similarity was undeniying. Which would make the next part of his plan even more fun to him.
After having secured the unconscious Prompto on the lovely device that had the others arms put above his head and legs and waist secured enough that the other could not get out, he went to get his nice little toolbox ready. Prompto’s head was hanging low, in a weird and probably uncomfortable angle. Ardyn waited for the other to finally wake up.
In the end, it didn’t take too long for Prompto to wake up. There was a small groan and a few small instances were the blonde tried to move, after realising that his movement was constricted, the movement got more rapid.
Ardyn tipped his head slightly, to get a better view of his struggling prisoner. “Ahh... sleeping Beauty finally awakens.” he drawled, gaining the attention of Prompto. He saw the other trying to lift his head more and he could see him blinking rapidly and checking his surroundings.
“Wha....?” Propto tried to speak, but Ardyn interrupted, placing his hand on Prompt’s waist, knowing that there had to be bruising from the fall. “Don’t, you’re still in recovery, right? I’d rather, you gather your strength first.” His mockingly caring voice was nearly drowned out by the hiss of pain, which was made by Prompto. Continuing his small play for his prisoner, he put his hand to his face, replacing the concern with a shocked stare. “Oh no, I didn’t imagine that it was this bad, next time I’ll ask the prince to be nicer to you.” Prompto was leveling him with a confused stare, but not daring to open his mouth just yet after being reprimanded.
“You do remember what happened, correct? He... pushed you.” as if it was an afterthought Ardyn added “... maybe he didn’t like your voice that much.”
Prompto didn’t give him a reaction, but Ardyn was sure that he could work with that. “But where are my manners! Allow me to explain yourself to you. What was it you said? ...let me think.... Ah, I remember.” and he watched Prompto as he took his hand from the others waist and brought some distance between them again. “I told Iggy once, that my mother used to humm to me. I think this is true. My mother always liked music, that's the only thing I truly remember of her.” Seeing Prompto’s horrified look, he gave a small laugh. “Inspiring, isn’t it? But I’m sure you remember more, you were just scared to tell them the truth, weren’t you?”
“MT’s do have an amazing memory, something that can not be said about humans.” he mused. “Not being able to forget your first few months after creation must have been painful.”
Ardyn was able to see the small shift in Prompto, as if he was trying to put something away. Ardyn would not let him. “You don’t have to lie to me, you know, MT-10-25-43. How long has it been someone called you by your proper Identification? I think I even remember your all so dear mother only calling you by that.” Ardyn gave the other a smile, while Prompto tried to shrink even lower in his bounds.
It was barely a whisper, when the other spoke. “Stop”, Prompto said, he could not handle the onslaught of memories that he had tried to bury.
Prompto could feel Ardyns hand in his hair, ruffling it with gentle care. It seemed as if Ardyn now wanted him to talk, so he carefully looked up and tried to defend his mother. “She still named me.”
Ardyn laughed at Promptos resistence, carefully he continued to pet the blond. “It seems, my favourite MT, that you still need to learn; ‘Come here! Prompto! without any delay!’ Was never intended to be a name, you were just grasping at straws. But alass, we went slightly off topic there... so let’s get on track, shall we?”
Ardyn stopped the gently care and went to get a few potions ready. “I felt a bit down lately, you see, and I thought maybe you could do your thing and make me feel a bit better. What do you think? Maybe there will even be a potion for you at the end, for being a good Magitek Unit.”
“I’m not an MT, I am Prompto Argentum. I know who I am.”
Ardyn respected the strength the blond showed, however, he hadn’t even started yet. He gripped the other’s arm and pressed into the wounds from the fall. Prompto tensed even more so then before but was glaring at Ardyn.
“No more backtalk, let us get to work, shall we?” He didn’t move too far away, simply replacing himself to be able to be watching Prompto better. Poor thing seemed to be unable to handle the stress, trembling more and more and trying to shake his binds of. This continued for many minutes, with Prompto retrying to get away more and more desperate, while also starting to hiss in pain. Then it stopped altogether. Arden could see the gears in Prompts head turning, realizing and rationalizing the situation he was in. After a moment in shared silence, Ardyn could see Prompto’s cheeks redden.
“Oh, you don’t have to be nervous about your this, it is what you were programmed for!” Ardyn said, never the less starting to humm the chocobo theme and slowly he was able to hear Prompto’s addition to it.
He stopped his own approach and simply listened. He could feel the drain of thousands of years leaving him. He felt a calm wash over him, that could not be described, even though Prompto sounded beaten and nervous and wasn’t able to really hold his melody.
As Prompto finished, Ardyn ordered to do it again but Prompto did not resume to his melody. He gave Ardyn a cold stare. “You promised me a potion.”
Ardyns gaze hardened. “But 10-25-43, you were not a good Magitek Unit.... and since you are not following orders, let us see, if your screams are going to be like music in my ears.”
And when the pain hit, Prompts screamed.

Prompto didn’t remember how long he had been hanging on this contraption, but his his limbs felt heavy and he didn’t even have the strenght left to keep his head upright. His throat was sore, he didn’t have much voice left after Ard.... after all those sessions he had to share with him. He only was barely conscious when he heard footsteps coming his way and the sound of the cell doors open. However, he didn’t really have the energy left to do something about it, he just hoped that it wouldn’t be too painful.
There was no sound at all surrounding him at first, then he heard the his restraints getting lose and tried to catch himself before falling to the floor. He let out a small groan and caught himself at the last second, so that he didn’t face plant the floor. Still desoriented he felt hands on him, and he tensed. Then he thought that he could hear Gladiolus.
“Hey, you alright?”
“Are you hurt? Do you need help?”, Prompto could swear that that was Ignis, right? Realising that he was still trying to catch his breath he muttered “I’m... fi...fine.”. Now able to recognise Noctis touch on him, he slightly turned to see his best friend, for the first time since what had happened on the train.
“...Thank you. Noct.”, he said. He was still trying to get used to his voice, moving to get himself to stand up. He managed to sit on his legs and get his torso upright, hearing Noct tell him not to sweat about it.
Prompto could not have been happier, because that sounded like Noctis. It sounded like someone he knew. His throat hurt, he had Ardyns commentary mended in his brain, and he would never forget what happened... and, he needed to know.
Carefully, he turned his head, he even went so far to keep his eyes closed at first, as he didn’t want to lose his hope too fast.
“Tell me. Were you worried about me?”
Prompto could hear the silence surrounding them, but still waiting for Noctis to reply. Noctis didn’t have to consider his answer, or did he? Prompto realised that he was starting to tremble, but then there Noctis. “Of course I was. What kind of question is that?”
It sounded so convincing. So for a moment, yeah, for a moment.... Prompto let himself believe.
“Of course.”, he repeated. “That’s why you’ve come, like I believed you would.” Prompto wanted to say more, but Noctis interrupted him, by calling his name. However, he couldn’t stop now.
“That’s why I told myself I couldn’t die. Not until I could see you and hear you tell me I’m not a fake. That I’m the real me.”
He wanted to add, that he needed to be called a name, not a number. He didn’t say anything as he stood up, and Noctis told him that he was sorry. Prompto deflected, because Noctis never should be sorry.
“Don’t be, Everything’s alright now.” He saw Gladio and Ignis by and for a moment, he was hoping that what he said could be the truth.
They had left this room, walking away from it and hoping to never return.
Prompto knew, that they were slowing down for him. He was glad, but at the same time he was afraid. He didn’t want to stay there much longer, but he was afraid that he would wake up if he tried to leave this place for good.
His limbs were still aching and they weren’t that far away from the Magitek Cells. He didn’t feel like he could talk. Something the others had taken note off and were waiting to ask him about, for sure.
They made their way to a small room with bunk beds, a radio and other supplies in it. “You ok, Prom?” Noctis was all of a sudden at his side, looking worried. Prompto nodded, tried to explain that there was nothing to worry about, but he could only mumble something illegible.
The silence was deafening.
“Should I turn on the radio?” Gladio asked, “so that we know, what is happening out there?”
Promptp regarded the device carefully, however, he saw nothing faulty with it. It would be important to be well informed, as they were surely planning on leaving this place for good soon.
The sound of the imperial news reporter filled the silence around, the news it brought however, were not improving their moods. Everything was going downhill. Since Altissia, they’ve been struggling and Prompto wasn’t sure how much more he could take. The newscast ended his report and the music-request section came up. There was a small message concerning the fact that they should try to see the good side, even in those dark times and that the request section would still be available.
“And the first request that we’ve got is from an avid fan, or so he told me. His request might seem childish, but he assured us, that the intended would be in histerics if we’d play it... so that’s what we will do, Ladies and Gentlemen. Let it be said, that we try to keep us all in good spirits – so this is dedicated to.... 10-25-43? .....Lan...?” Prompto could hear how the newscaster wanted to ask someone about it, he heard the cut from the studio, and most importantly, he heard the chocobo theme playing from the radio.
He couldn’t move, but he had to move. He had to get away. Ardyn had to be watching them, Ardyn had to...had to... had to?
“PROMPTO!”
Prompto felt hands on him and paniked, he tried to squirm away, noticed that there was radio silence surrounding him now. He couldn’t see anything, he had closed his eyes? When had he done that?
“Prompto?”
Again, what was that supposed to mean? P-r-o-m-p-t-o, His name, right. Not..not the number that was said. They were calling his name. Something HE had never done. He was safe.
“Prom?”
He was safe. He was currently being squashed by Gladio and Noctis, while Ignis seemed to hold his hands up to Prompt’s face.
“Guys?” That was seriously weird.
“You back with us buddy?”
“What happened to the radio?”
Prompto could see that the radio was in shambles. Parts strewn around the small room as if someone, or at least two people, had used it for training practice. He heard Ignis sigh next to him. “I can only assume, from what just transpired, that Ardyn knew?”
Prompto gave a small nod, before he realised that Ignis wouldn’t be able to see it,“Yes”. Ardyn had known everything. He knew more than all of his friends and he wasn’t sure how he felt about that. He never imagined being in this situation. He was at loss.
Ignis sighed a second time. “I imagine... you don’t want your player back?”
“I’m not sure if I can handle music.” Prompto admited. He could not forget the way Ardyn spoke to him, used him like a machine. Like he would have used his player before... The many ways Ardyn had poisened his voice, as well as every melody, for him.
Ignis hands went from his face to his legs, as if they were holding him in place. Gladiolus and Noctis moving away so that Prompto was at least able to breath again.
“Prompto, let me tell you from experience, that running away from something will only get you so far. Even though it will be hard, you have to fight back. Don’t let it get the best of you.” there was a pause, “I know you can do it.”
Prompto felt so tired. There was Ignis, who couldn’t see, telling him that things would be better. He was just afraid of music. Of what it represents, what Ardyn told him.
He was weak.
Ignis should not worry about him. The tears that had started to fall were only further proof of his weakness.
He felt Ignis move closer to him, holding him and even putting himself in a way that Prompto was hidden in Ignis jacket.
“I’m not going to let him see you like this.” Prompto let Ignis hold him, he heard Noctis and Gladiolus getting ready to rest, Ignis motioning them their beds. Prompto heard Ignis tell them that he would take the first watch.
Prompto still felt Ignis and he had managed to calm down, but the other would not let him go.
“Iggy?”
“Yes, Prompto?”
“Are you humming?”
“Oh, was I?” Ignis answered with a small smile. Remembering a similar conversation that seemed ages ago, “I can’t recall.”
There was a mumbled, “you’re still humming though”, coming from close to his lap, as Prompto was still placed close to him.
“It helps me focus, and you know,” he added, “a very good friend of mine really brought the muscisian out of me.”
The notes were not at all forming a specific melody; they were just a few notes all on their own. Pompto bit his lip, but after awhile he started to relax and drifted off to sleep, with Ignis humming at his side.
Prompto woke up with Ignis at his side, not burried in his lap, but still as a more or less comfortable pillow. Ignis himself was fast asleep, not knowing that Prompto was currently trying to orient himself.
He was not back in the cell. His legs were still aching, but that would fade over time. Carefully checking his wristband, he saw that it hadn’t betrayed him in his sleep, or that Ardyn had not taken it away from him during his moment of carelessness.
He shouldn’t have slept.
“Prompto!” The quiet but forceful voice of Gladio shook Pormpto out of his mtrain of thought, and out of his side of the bunk bed, as he fell down like a brick.
It didn’t hurt as much as he thought it would, but it would still add another bruise to his ongoing collection.
Gladio, who had seen all of that happening, as he had taken over the watch, hold out a hand for Prompto to take. “Sorry about that. Didn’t think I would scare you this much.” He said.
Prompto just shook his head in an apology.
“How are you holding up, bud?”, and Prompto knew that even though there were many answers to that question, only would was the one he could give.
“I’m fine.”
Prompto liked to think that, it was short, and didn’t imply that he was weak, or a machine. It meant that he was fine and having no troubles thinking about the things that happened to him, because they were nothing in comparison to what the others experienced.
It was logical. Somehow. For sure.
“Don’t give me this crap. You’re hurting. We all know it.”
“Then why did you even ask?” Prompto replied, angrily. He didn’t want to have this conversation in the morning, or ever.
“Because I care about how you feel, Prompto.” Prompto wanted to say something to that, but Gladiolus took a few steps closer to him, while also motioning to Prompto that he should move towards him.
Confused, Prompto complied.
“I know that this was hard for you. You are allowed to be hurt.”, there was silence between them, as Gladiolus turned his head to Noct, “I should not have been this hard on Noctis, while we were on the train. We all took what happened differently and I stepped over the line.”
Prompto’s eyes were huge. He never knew Gladio still beat himself over that. “But... but you had to get us move forward right? Right?”
“Yes, but it could have gone a lot smoother. What I did... it helped Ardyn do his thing. If we hadn’t fought like this... we’d have been togther and Ardyn would not have had a chance to strike.”
“This was not your fault.” Prompto said and Gladiolus nodded. “I know, but at the same time... the thought still stings.”
Prompto wished that he could help, but he didn’t know what to say. Though, Gladiolus seemed to know what to say, because he added. “You up for our usual routine?”
The fact that the other still wanted to train with him made him tense, he still did not want to sing or hum ever again. “I’m... not sure....”, he started, but Gladiolus interrupted him without a second thought. “I don’t need you to hum, just sit on my back like usual and keep me company. I do enjoy your company and ideas for my training.”
There was a pat on Prompto’s back before Gladio set himself up in the small room, to get his push-ups done and waited for Prompto to join him.
For a moment, Prompto was smiling.
The moment were everyone was awake, they’ve decided to leave this place for good, while still trying to get to the crystal.
As Noctis lead them through the corridors, Prompto was able to see more of the facility he had beeen kept in, while both Gladiolus and Ignis were at his side, paying close attention to everything that moved.
Most of the halls seemed to be empty, but Noctis mentioned that he had to fight his way through, so Prompto tried to be prepared. However, he hadn’t been prepared for Ignis, to recognise a sound, or that he’d ask Noctis if he heard that. He wasn’t prepared to try and listen what Ignis meant and then, as they went through the next door, hear his own voice together with that sound that they were trying to make out.
Prompto had stopped moving as he heard his own voice, it sounded flat and tired. As if he didn’t have the strength to truly stay awake, but still tried to.
He heard himself plead to thin air arround him. He heard himself ask for a few hours rest.
As he turned to see the others, he realised that they were hearing this too. That was when Prompto heard himself sing the lines that Ardyn had given him back then. It had been a simple melody, following the rhythm of ‘Are you sleeping brother John’.
"Are you breaking? Are you breaking?
Naive Prom, Naive Prom.
The machine was used for singing
Nothing more, nothing more."
Prompto saw the others shudder slightly, before they went ahead. Prompto stood there, unsure on how to proceed, but Noctis look of determination got him to follow them. In the moment of quiet that followed the recording of his voice, Prompto recognised the lock on the door.
He could not do this. They weren’t supposed to know. He never wanted them to know.

Date: 2017-03-16 07:37 am (UTC)I did not abandon this, but a lot came up during the last few weeks and I'm still not really happy with what I've written so far. I'll take another look over it and hopefully have it done soon.
However, with my midterms coming up it still might take some time, so again, I'm really sorry for the delay.
