Fill: Frozen And Unscathed, no pairings, serious injury 1/2
Date: 2016-12-22 09:06 pm (UTC)ps it feels as if it's been written by ignis, i swear to god there's something up with my sentence structures that needs to be Brought Down a Notch
It had been a series of fortunate events for the boys to be walking this far to the remains of Costlemark Tower. By accident they had found an entrance on a first try, and by the same occur had it been night by then, since the stairs to the dungeon only showed themselves at night-time. There was an emerald stone somewhere in the ruins and their quest was to acquire it and hand it to Dino in Galdin Quay. It was supposed to be a piece of cake job.
They had stepped inside the opening, gone underneath the ragged tower and its structures. It hadn't taken long for Ignis to get lost on the ancient architecture that had somehow survived the erosion the tower itself had witnessed thorough the years and for Gladiolus to get excited about the daemons they were about to meet. As a disjointed group they ventured forth, never losing sight of each other but clearly all in their own thoughts.
They moved slowly, yes, but with unwavering decisiveness. Cutting their way through hordes of Slime, Galvande, and Yojimbos, looting every corner of every room they crossed. During the past weeks of travelling together this had become a routine of sorts. One of them wasn't having it, though.
Noctis reached out to an object on the floor and dusted it off to his thigh, pocketing a potion as a rattle of wallet chain approached him from behind.
”What if this is actually an errand for Imperial Army?” Prompto'd tiptoed his way behind Noctis and stretched his arms a mere meter away from the prince. ”What if Dino's one of them? He could be. Wouldn't be against our luck to be played into someone's pocket like that, both figuratively and literally.”
Gladio threw a pebble that landed on his hair. ”Stop using such big words, they'll hurt your head.”
”No, but seriously, consider this: what if he's been trying to take us out this whole time, just done it more inert than others.” The skip in his step was suddenly gone and the chirp of his voice had turned grave. None of his companions were looking at him as he tried to drill through Noct's thick skull with his gaze. ”All these fetch quests? All dangerous as hell. He's a journalist, he just wants to be the first to inform the public about our death. Your death.”
”Prompto...” began a sigh on prince's lips, ”the whole world's not after you. Some people are nice, right? Like Aranea or Iris. Good people exist.”
”A-ha! You just solved this by yourself. All the bad guys are men! It's only logical to...”
Before Prompto had time to end his sentence, Gladio clasped a hand over his mouth. ”Shut your pretty mouth before something happens to it”, he said harshly and shoved Prompto behind his back. Something behind a corner was making noises that would've made goosebumps crawl up a lesser man's back.
Good for them, then; they were no lesser men.
Ignis used one of his daggers to get a better view to the next room. It reflected back a handful of enemies, nothing they hadn't conquired before. ”There's also a Red Giant, which I doubt will be of any extra effort.”
”Okay. I'll attack the big one from behind, the Slimes should only take a few hits”, Noctis ordered. He gave a fixed look to his companions and summoned a sword he'd familiarized himself with. ”We're running low on curatives but got enough potions to last a lifetime, so keep each other safe.”
”Try to keep Prompto from turning into a frog, then. Got it”, he heard Gladios conclude and Prompto rise his voice to object the discrimination he was aimed with.
Smiling to himself Noctis leapt to the next room and threw a Blizzard across it. The cast broke out on feet of the Giant and froze it to a pause while the lesser enemies from further back kept roaming the space. They took some damage but seemed otherwise unaffected by the chaos.
As Ignis and Prompto started picking the Slimes apart one by one, Noctis and Gladios ran towards the frozen Giant. Its flaming sword illuminated the floor before it so finding it in the darkness was child's play. While running, Noctis warped himself through the monster, onto the backside, and stabbed somewhere between its third and fourth lumbar vertebra. The skin wasn't penetrated nor was blood shed, but the attack took the now melted monster's focus away from Gladio who in turn got an opening to its left ankle. He swung his sword with full force and flinged it to the monster's feet, hitting it critically to a weak place. The Giant staggered a little before falling onto the floor, as Gladiolus had schemed.
What wasn't expected, though, was another Red Giant storming its way to the room as soon as the body of the first one hit the floor.
”Ignis?” the prince yelled across the room as the flaming sword of the latest Giant was struck through the air next to his head. ”Instructions!”
Piercing a pole through a Slime's mouth Ignis laid his gaze on Noct. He calculated the situation for a tenth of a second before commanding everyone to regroup near him.
”Are we going to be able to take out two of them?” Prompto asked out of breath and loaded ammunition to his weapon. The wallet chain that'd earlier rattled as he moved was nowhere to be seen, only a few lonely links now hanging from his hips.
Gladiolus flexed his muscles and took a better grip of his sword. ”The least we can do is try.”
---
It was a troublesome fight.
They'd gotten rid of the first Giant and smaller minions that had rolled in, though Prompto'd been downed twice during the encounters. Noctis was repeatedly on a verge of statis no matter how hard he tried to preserve himself, and they were steadily running out of potions. The driplets of sweat that found their way down Ignis' temples were an indication of their own that the fight was taking a toll on even the strongest of them.
Using the last of his strength to cut the head of the Flame Giant off its shoulders, Gladio let his weapon scatter on the floor as he fell on his knees. ”That's... That's the last of them.”
”I'm spent”, he heard an agreement of sorts from Noctis, who with Ignis assessed the status of their curatives. It seemed they still had enough items to find the Emerald and make it back to Dino the Journalist, provided that nothing drastic happened before then. First they had to find the gemstone, though.
”I noticed some extra hallways North-East and South-East from here, they should probably be investigated”, Ignis said to Prompto and Noctis. He threw his own pair of flashlight towards the blonde and then fixed a gaze at the prince. ”Keep an eye out for mineral deposits while Gladiolus and I figure out if there's a way to move forward from this chamber.”
Nodding, Noct took Prompto by the wrist and in lockstep they left to explore the said hallways. The two men who were left fell into a comfortable silence as daemon bodies around them started to dissolve into air.
If Gladio had counted correctly, they'd been beneath the ground for nine to ten hours now. It was probably well past lunch time, and he started to notice an increasing nausea that was starting to settle on his stomach now that he wasn't on the move and killing things.
”Iggy, you've got any food on you?”
”Sadly, no. There's only so much I can carry and the last batch was stolen by Goblins three rooms back.”
”Hmph. Guess I'll die then.”
Ignis walked around the massive chamber with hands behind his back and a stern scowl on his face. He checked time to estimate the chances of them finding the gemstone within the next three hours and wondered if it'd be appropriate for them just to turn around and head back to the surface. It would be in their best interest to retry pleasing Dino some other time. ”How about you go and fetch his Highness and Prompto? I think we should turn back and resupply before finishing the task.”
”Aye aye, captain.” With a grunt Gladio stood from the floor and took a few faltering steps to his right.
The few first steps were nothing to worry about, but there was a crack on his third one. The floor shook and the tile he was standing on came alive as it started to slowly rise towards the ceiling. The ceiling wasn't there, though: there was a hole right where the tile rose before it came down again.
”I'm fairly certain that's our way to proceed”, Ignis said as he looked up the ceiling and saw some light beaming through the hole. It was as if he was looking into a well but instead of darkness he saw a light at the end. ”I knew there was some really advanced technology in here, but I never thought it'd be that advanced.”
Still bewildered by the tour de force of the place, Gladio took a step backwards and made sure not to walk on top of the tile again. ”Okay, at least we don't have to walk upstairs. I'll go get the kids.”
He didn't get far before there was a loud noise from where he was heading. It was soon accompanied a sound of the prince warping and a desperate cry from Prompto.
”Hey, don't leave me here with this!”
”Then run! You have feet, use them.”
Taking a few hurried steps Gladio found himself at the entrance of one of the hallways, from which Noctis ran right towards him. ”Hey, watch where you're going!” he roared as he gave the man space to dash past him.
”Sorry, Gladio, gotta blast.”
Soon the prince was followed by an out of breath Prompto and behind him a 15 feet tall, ferocious and slithering Naragami.
The monster was huge. It had a lower body of a snake and a upper one resembled somewhat of a human, though its skin was more ashen and translucent than any living body's Gladiolus had ever seen. Loose skin around its chest and upper arms jiggled in time with its movements as it crawled closer and closer to the doorway and towards a better lighting. Prompto had already gotten away from it, now sprinting towards Ignis and Noctis, though Gladiolus was still determined to cut this monster's journey short.
”Iggy, prepare the elevator”, he yelled as he summoned a sword and a shield and took a stance facing the intruder.
Ignis let him know with a desperate voice that the platform wasn't reacting to him in any way, and that they'd have to fight the daemon before attempting to fix it. It was all the same to Gladio, he still had enough energy to slice up some more creatures forsaken by gods.
All four of them found their ways to prepare for the Naragami. Ignis kept his distance, knowing full well there was only so much he could do in close range combat, while Noctis made sure to jump high enough to strike the human part of the daemon instead of the scaled tail. The fourth one of them was lost to Gladiolus' eyes, though a blast of a gunfire echoed in the room ever the same.
No matter how good fighters any of them were, the previous battles and lack of food and sleep had started to weight on them. Miscalculations were made, as were misteps into each other's space which resulted in friendly fire on almost everyone's behalf. ”Sorry, my hand slipped”, Noct said next to Gladiolus before he was silenced by a spray of water that struck them both backwards.
There was indistinct yelling in the background as only Gladio rose from the ground.
”Highness!”
”Fuck, Noct, get up”, Gladio ordered as he slid next to Noctis' motionless body. They were both laying in a puddle of dirty water the daemon had summoned before, and the coldness of the tiles below them was starting to creep in. Panic flared in the older man's chest as he shook Noct's limp body and tried to force some life into him. ”Open your eyes, you pest!”
”Don't you dare to slap him awake”, Ignis ordered with a booming voice when dropping on his knees next to them and handing a feather of a phoenix towards his unconscious friend. It didn't take long for the feather to burn to dust on Noctis' face and to Noctis to slowly open his eyes.
”Thought we'd lost you there for a second”, Gladio sighed in relief and fixed some hair from his friend's face with a trembling hand.
Re: Fill: Frozen And Unscathed, no pairings, serious injury 2/2
Date: 2016-12-22 09:07 pm (UTC)As he and Ignis were keeping an eye on Noct, the Naragami had the time to corner Prompto. The slithering mess of scales and water spread itself in front of the boy and fomed a barrier between him and his friends, blocking out direct eye contact between them. Prompto stood between a rock and a hard place, strangling a gun like a lifeline before he got his voice to obey him. "A little help here?"
"Shit", Gladio cursed and helped Noct up. The prince was once again full of life as he summoned a greatsword and took a few steps forwards. Determination made his musces tense and tremble, though no amount of preparation could've readied him for what was about to come next.
A fast eye could see an object being thrown over the daemon's head. The little circular flask illuminated a faint light of cold light across the air before gravity made it fall downwards.
Ignis' eyes widened as he put two and two together.
"Prompto, no!" was the last thing anyone heard before the cast hit the floor and a Blizzard was summoned into the room.
Coldness swept through every one of them as the winds picked up and snow started to fall. Both Gladiolus and Ignis threw themselves in front of Noct to shield him from the cast and its magic, and within mere seconds the room stilled to a pause. The only noise was Prompto's rabid breathing, as he readjusted his Bioblaster and shot at the Naragami to break it to thousands and thousands little pieces.
The body of their enemy had shielded him from the worst of what the cast would've had to offer, so he was the first on his feet and running towards his companions. All three of them were still frozen in place, though Noctis' teeth clattering gave him away from beneath Ignis' and Gladiolus' bodies. The elemencies around them were still at work as Prompto knelt on the floor to cup the prince's head between his hands.
"Noct, are you okay?" he asked and tried to keep his body from trembling. "I got the snake now, we're safe now."
"Safe? Safe?!" Ignis raised his voice as the ice on his muscles started to melt. "You used a Blizzard on a reptile-based enemy while we're in the line of fire, is this what you call safe?"
"I panicked, okay? What was I supposed to do?" the blonde yelled back and let his hands drop from Noctis' face. All his previous panicking had now transformed into pure frustration towards Ignis. "And I finished it, why're you so worked up on this?"
"Because I told you not to. You're lucky it was already in a brink of death; reptiles are poikilothermic creatures and don't take damage from cold. They'll only slow down for a time the cast takes effect and continue unscatched once it's over. You could've put us all in danger for no profit."
"Well, I didn't. And had you had my back, I wouldn't have had to..."
"Guys", came Noctis' weak voice. "There's something wrong with Gladio."
That shut up both yelling men. The strangled way Noctis' voice came out made them look at him and Gladiolus, whose body was still curled on top of the prince, frozen in place. He hadn't moved an inch even though the Blizzard was long gone.
Without a second thought Ignis freed himself of his jacket and threw it on their friend. "We need to warm him up. There's a possibility of brain damage due to lack of oxygen if the respiratory system isn't working, so we really need to work fast."
Prompto untied the flannel on his waist to lay it on Gladio's shoulders as Noct started to rummage through their bags for a Phoenix Down, a Gold Needle, anything. He comes up with nothing. "Who's got the Fira casts?"
"No", Ignis commands. "Absolutely not. We're not using another cast in this situation."
"Then you come up with something! Why hasn't he moved yet, what's up with him?"
"I don't know yet. He should've come out of it already."
While the prince and his advisor were bickering over Gladio's back, Prompto had gotten on his feet to scout the surrounding hallways. "I'll go get something to start a fire with", he said before hastily running to the previous room in which he was sure he'd seen some dry roots hanging from the ceiling.
Ignis reached behind himself and brought a vial in front of Noctis' face. "Could you warm this up for me?"
With a nod Noct touched the glass flask and made it warm up with a tiny amount of magic he was able to summon. He'd been so dependant on elemental casts of destruction that he really couldn't use them to warm his friend up without catastrophical conclusions.
The second they'd gotten Gladios to drink a gulp of the warmed up potion his eyes fluttered open and he's breathing became regular. With the ability to move came also the shivering and the trembling of his body, and Noctis was worried that he was about to bite his tongue off with how hard his teeth were clattering.
"Why is he this wet?" Ignis asked as he took off Gladiolus' jacket from beneath his and Prompto's clothes. "A blizzard only drops the temperature, but he's frozen solid."
Noct explained him how the daemon had shot at them and K.O.'d him while doing so. His explanation grew rapid as he tried to warm Gladio up by running his hands up and down his back and upper arms, but there was no sign of him getting better before Prompto came back. He was still trembling and unresponsive, but living up to his status Prompto found something positive to say.
"His lips aren't as blue anymore", the blonde sais as he dropped a pile of roots, leaves, and trash on the floor. "He's warming up."
They lit up a little makeshift fire and gathered around it. Noctis, being wet himself, could feel the coldness creeping into his bones, but he didn't dare to voice it before Gladio's teeth had stopped clicking together and the man'd fallen asleep. He must've been exhausted to doze off like that.
Had it been Prompto or him, they wouldn't have survived the hypothermia, had Ignis told Noctis. They were discussing the situation, their options and possible outcomes with silent voices, both of them still moving their hands on Gladolius' body to provide even the tiniest bit of friction to bring warmth.
The situation was indeed grim, though by every passing second they were further from the possibility of Gladio's body freezing to death. Ignis busied himself with finding anything eatable from the chamber or the hallways while Prompto snuggled to Gladio's chest and fell asleep. Noct was sitting there with Gladios' head on his lap, idly stroking his fingers through the man's damp hair and watching the fire play around the twigs and leaves.
If only they'd be home now, none of this would've happened.
---
"How long was I out?"
"Approximately eight hours, give or take."
Gladio sat dumbfounded on the floor with two of his friends on his lap. His skin was still irritated and red, but altogether he was feeling so much better given the fact he couldn't recall the ending of the last battle at all. "So, want to fill me in?"
Ignis took a sip of his lukewarm tea before sighing. "Noctis told me you got hit by a water blast before Prompto threw a Blizzard to save his hide. You tried to shield the prince and got frozen, fell unconscious, and were about to die of hypothermia. We warmed you up though."
"Yeah, I figured I was still alive", the man mused. "Wasn't really expecting the afterlife to have these kinds of virgins waiting for me."
"You're talking about the only son of King of Lucis, whom you're supposed to look after. Try to be more mature about it."
"What, not backing up Prompto? Iggy, you've gotten soft."
"He's a part of the problem at the moment, there's really nothing I can say to save his neck right now."
"At least he didn't turn into a toad again."
"Actually", came a high pitched voice from his lap, "if I had turned into a frog, I would've survived the Blizzard. I'm pretty sure frogs are reptiles and reptiles are poikilothermic as well."
The grin on the blonde's face was an apologetic one and aimed at Gladiolus. The bastard had been awake to find an opening in the conversation in which to chime in. Ignis couldn't help but chuckle.
"You're quite right."
"We should really stop teaching Prompto such difficult words", Gladio said to Ignis before turning his gaze to the man on his lap. "Do you even know what it means? "Poikilothermic"?"
"Nah", Prompto laughed and shut his eyes once again. "I only know that reptiles are like that but you aren't, and that's why you almost died on us."
A light silence fell on them before Noctis stirred as well. His sleep-clogged eyes were shut as he made himself comfortable, though Glaido was sure the prince had just wiped drool all over his jeans.
"Don't do it again, I'd rather have you here as you are", came an order from royalty before he fell asleep again.
