Fill: Part 1
Date: 2017-01-04 07:35 am (UTC)They’d pulled up into the dusty parking lot to refuel and restock on some potions after a grueling battle deep in one of the dungeons. Gladio was chatting up the man behind the local Crowe’s Nest counter, looking for jobs to replenish their dwindling gil as Ignis and Prompto had a look around while Noctis topped the regalia up.
Gladio was done first. “Bad news, there aren’t any new marks up,” he said, shaking his head. “We’ll have to camp out until we can find another job.”
Noctis groaned. “Again?” His back ached at the thought of hard haven stone. He appreciated all the small comforts Gladio and Ignis gave him even in a cramped tent, but they were all extremely exhausted. A bed would’ve been nice.
“You could try selling some stuff,” Gladio said, raising his brows. “Less to bring around.”
“No, it’s okay,” Noctis said quickly, loathe to part with the new weapons they’d picked up during the trip.
“Why the long faces?” Prompto asked, popping up between them. He and Ignis were back from their short tour, it looked like.
“No Hunts are up, so guess we’re still broke,” Noctis said reluctantly, expecting Prompto to whine with him.
To his surprise, his friend brightened visibly. “Well if that’s all, I might have just the solution!”
“What?” Noctis asked warily.
Prompto presented a violently pink flyer with a flourish. “Ta-dah!”
“What is it?” Gladio asked, patience wearing a bit thin.
“A contest! The prize is 15,000 gil- and a surprise gift!” Prompto nearly vibrated with excitement. “Think of all the beds and food that’ll buy!”
Noctis looked the flyer over. “Prompto. This is a beauty contest.”
“And?”
“As in, for girls.” Noctis gestured towards them all. “None of us are qualified.”
“And that’s where you’re wrong,” Prompto grinned.
Noctis frowned. “I… don’t follow.”
The others caught on quicker. Gladio smirked, a fiendish expression if Noctis ever saw one. “He’s right, Noct. One of us did win a beauty contest before.”
“No,” Noctis said, pale and backing away. “You can’t make me,” he insisted.
“Come now, it’s for the good of the group. A king must make some tough choices,” Ignis said, pushing up his glasses and voice prim. Noctis knew he was enjoying this, that traitor.
“That was some magazine deciding stuff based on a few photos! And I was a kid!” Noctis protested.
“Beds, Noct! And food! We can finally try the crab over at the Cradle!”
Noctis wavered. He did like good seafood and it had been far too long since they had any, but--
“Come on, pretty please!” Prompto pouted.
“We’ll take care of everything, you just have to walk up and look pretty like you always do,” Gladio said, leaning against the Regalia's side.
Noctis closed his eyes briefly. “If anyone finds out--”
“Nobody’d imagine the crown prince was here, not in a thousand years!” Prompto said.
“...Fine,” Noctis sighed. “But just because I’m entering doesn’t mean I’m going to win!” he warned.
“Excellent, I’ll start work on your dress,” Ignis said, brushing imaginary dust off his hands as he headed for the Regalia’s trunk.
“My… dress,” Noctis said uncertainly. “Just… don’t make it frilly. Or pink.”
“It’ll be tasteful,” Ignis reassured.
Several hours later, Noctis wasn’t sure he trusted what Ignis meant by “tasteful” anymore.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Noctis said, examining himself. He’d put everything they’d laid out on, even though it’d taken a while to figure out where everything went. Especially with the others calling out encouragement as he changed in the backseat of the Regalia before he shooed them away.
In the end it’d taken a full thirty minutes before he wobbled out of the Regalia in 6-inch thigh-high boots and dark fishnet stockings. He had on a leather dress made from one of his spare jackets. It cinched tight at his waist, before flaring out a little, the skirt hem stopping well above his boots. Ignis had embellished it with subtle lace and gold accents that made him wonder if his chief advisor had ever secretly harbored a frustrated dream of being a fashion designer. The dress had deep v in front, showing off creamy skin up to his navel- and he didn’t want to know where the padded lace bra he was wearing came from- especially not after hearing Gladio talking to Cindy over the phone. Cindy had driven over, and just to cap things off, was staying to see the show.
A pair of simple clip-on earrings, an intricate lace choker, and a touch of makeup completed the look. He’d been adamant that nobody be around while he changed, so Ignis had done the make up and re-styled his hair to something soft and curling before he got in. Checking his reflection in the Regalia’s mirror-like side, he wasn’t sure he liked what he saw.
It was, undisputably, a girl, soft fluffy hair and glossy pouting lips- he winced and desperately prayed to the Six that this would all be a bad dream soon.
“Now ain’t that a purdy picture,” Cindy cooed, clopping up in her own heeled boots.
“Cindy!” Noctis fell back against the Regalia, embarrassed and tugging down at the hem of the dress. “Nobody was supposed to go back here.”
Cindy laughed. “Don’t you worry, Prince, I’m just here to let you know the show’s about to start. My oh my, though, your friends and I did a great job, if I do say so myself,” she mused, looking him over. “They’ll be in for a real treat,” she decided, hand on hip.
“Come on then, I’ll escort you up before someone comes along and eats you right up,” she said cheerfully.
“Eats me?” Noctis repeated, but he followed her around the back of the parking lot up to the stage that had been set up on the other side of the street.
He flinched at the neon lights- the stage itself was covered in pink material and balloons made to look like flowers. Spectators and participants were milling around, the girls getting their hair brushed as their mothers and friends put finishing touches on their outfits. At least he wasn’t the only one in a skirt too short to sit in. There were already girls walking out on stage, so the contest must’ve started already.
“You’re number fifteen, go on, knock em out!” Cindy smiled, slapping Noctis’ hip. No- that was definitely his ass. Noctis flushed, stumbling a little as he made his way up.
“...And our next contestant is contestant number fifteen, blowing into town all the way from Hammerhead, the lovely Lucia!”
Noctis was going to kill whoever decided he was going to be called Lucia. Really? He took a breath and stepped onstage, pasting his most parade-friendly expression on his face. He could do this. It was just walking. He’d been presented before- he’d taken lessons since he was a child on how to walk and talk like a prince should, particularly after his injury had healed.
He straightened his shoulders and walked as gracefully as he could manage in the heels up to the center of the stage. He did a little turn at the end of the runway and looked out at the crowd, spotting his friends, they were gawking. It made his smile a little more strained.
“Wow, whatta stunner, amirite, ladies and gents?” the host was saying cheerfully.

A/N: Thought I'd put it up, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get the second part out. :'D Pls excuse my attempts at a Southern twang.
