FILL: In a Sea of Fog, Gladio/Noctis 1/?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
AN: I have a vague idea for a beginning, middle, and end, but I have no idea how long it's going to be because I tend to get sidetracked a lot. Wish me luck.

He wakes up sluggish, on a Safe Heaven in some anonymous field, a weak sun peaking out from the horizon. The first thing that crosses his mind is that he can't figure out if it's sunset or sunrise.

A shrill demonic shriek helps him figure it out.

He struggles upward, expecting to see one or two goblins circling the Safe Heaven, then his stomach lurches. Dozens and dozens of beasts circle the Heaven, swinging their scythe-like tails around and making glowing, red arches in the darkness. He's never seen so many demons at the same time, especially not surrounding the neon-blue glow warding a Safe Heaven.

"I guess we wait for morning," a deep voice says.

He follows the voice, heart thumping in his chest, and narrows his eyes. A mountain of man sits about a foot away from him, dark brown hair loose and wild, a vertical scar running over his left eye. Elaborate tattoos and sculpted muscle adorn both his arms all the way to his massive shoulders.

"Who're you?"

The man looks to him, opens his mouth, closes it, swallows thickly, and looks around. "Who are you?"

"I'm - "

Who is he? The answer is a breadth away from his grasp, clouded in a sea of fog. Closing his eyes and trying to run into the fog makes him dizzy and nauseous, so he opens his eyes for something concrete to focus on. The demon's glistening, charcoal-black skin does little to calm his nerves, so he searches for the muscular guy.

"Hey," says the man, sliding a little closer.

Despite his size, scars, and tattoos, something about the man sets him at ease, so he (what's my name?) huddles closer as well.

"I don't remember my name," admits the guy.

"Me neither." The man admitted it first, so it's okay to say it out loud. "I don't even know what I look like."

"You look. . . pretty."

That fully distracts him from the demons' chorus of shrieks for the first time. "Well, you look like some kind of criminal."

"I do?" The big guy's face falls, instantly making him feel like an eel.

"Uh. . ." He gestures at the man's eye, noting his thick eyebrows and then looking a little lower to admire the thick beard protecting a sharp jawline. Instinctively, he knows his own face is smooth as a baby's. "You have a scar, so. . ."

The guy reaches up and runs a pair of long fingers over the scar. "That doesn't mean anything! Besides, we're together. If I'm a criminal, then you probably are too."

"Or maybe you kidnapped me." It's probably the dumbest thing he could be doing under the circumstances, but he feels like he can't back down from this giant of a man.

An enterprising demon tries to breach the Safe Heaven's protective barrier. The sharp, loud sting of its skin frying against the holy interrupts their stupid fight. The muscular guy immediately shields him. He needs a nickname for the man, even if he keeps it private.

Though a part of him is surprised, he automatically allows the man to angle his muscular body to completely shield him.

"We shouldn't fight," says the muscular man.

Jack, he thinks as he stands up. He looks like a Jack.

Jack is head taller than him. He tries to take comfort in that.

"Yeah, we should stick close until morning at least."

"Hopefully we'll get our memories back in the morning," says Jack. "Maybe these demons took our memories."

"Yeah." He breathes, surprised by a sudden surge of hope. "I've never seen so many of them. Who knows what they can all do when there's so many."

"I knows there's not supposed to be so many too," says Jack, a frown evident in his tone. "But I don't know how I know that. It's hard to explain."

"No, I get it." It's like having facts without context. Facts without memories.

Like the fact that he can trust Jack.

"Well, you look like some kind of criminal." - Ouch. Cannot really disagree with the wary eye or assessment Noctis jumped to, but that had to sting.

A vague idea for a beginning, middle, and end…? Well, you’re in a much better position than I have ever been when it comes to the writing process, haha. I didn’t notice any spelling mistakes and I like how Noctis’ + Galdiolus’ instincts are nearing the surface. Jack is off the list, so I am curious as to what name Noctis will ultimately be comfortable with…
I wish you luck and hope you will find the time to finish this fill for the OP, yourself, and the ever present lurkers! :)

AN: I didn't anticipate how difficult narration would be when one of the characters doesn't have a name. This fic would have been easier in first person, lol.

More and more demons surround the Heaven as the night goes on, and not just the thin ones carrying a moon-like scythe in their tails. Trios of tall, humanoid creatures wearing silk kimonos start dancing around them, looking less eager than the little goblins, but exponentially more terrifying.

"How many do you guess the barrier can keep out?"

"Let's pray we don't find out," says Jack. He's found a handful of wooden sticks that he fancies are good enough for a fire.

"Do you have a match?"

Jack pauses his inspection of the wood fragment. "Probably," he says, checking his back pockets, drawing attention to legs that seem to an ass that's as muscular as the rest of him.

Which is probably not something he should be noticing, but. . . well. He sighs and steps closer as Jack produces a silver lighter with a satisfied smirk.

"Who goes out to the wilderness without so much a lighter?"

He doesn't check his own pockets and shrugs.

Jack gets a the fire going, but it lasts less than an hour. A full moon hangs over them, providing a modicum of light but doing little to help them against the cold. He's grateful when Jack throws one of those massive arms around him, mumbling something about hypothermia, and burrows closer to the man's chest. The cold at this back makes him appreciate Jack's heat all the more, and he manages to fall asleep despite feeling a pack of hounds at his tail.

"Wake up, sunshine!" Jack's voice pierces through the fog in his mind, only to be overtaken by a wave of bone-deep exhaustion. "Come on. There's no telling how much light we have."

It doesn't feel like they have much. Certainly not enough to tempt him or annoy him into opening his eyes. He has no choice but to do so when Jack starts shaking him, and sees only thick, grey clouds above him. If there's any light at all, it's a miracle that it's strong enough to drive off the demons. One of the clouds drops a tiny snowflake that hits the tip of his nose, making him frown.

"Even a little snow's enough to make me suspect we're close to Tenebrae," says Jack. "Maybe Nifelheim, even."

A chilly wind passes over the Heaven as he struggles to a seated position, rubbing his eyes. He doesn't have a headache, exactly; just a kind of. . . thickness over his eyes.

"Why the hell aren't we wearing jackets?" he asks, staring off into the distance. A couple of inches of fluffy-white snow cover the tundra-like region. There's not a road in sight.

"I don't know," says Jack. "But it's gonna fuck us up if we're too far away from an outpost. And with no road in sight, I'm not even sure which direction we should be going."

"Maybe we should stay here. Someone might be looking for us."

"No, that's practically suicide," says Jack. "At the very, very least, we need to find a water source, firewood, and kill something for food. If we find a road while we're at it, all the better. An outpost, and we're golden."

They have no weapons, so killing something is going to be an interesting challenge.

"What if someone comes by looking and assumes we're not here?" Without the barrier, they might not make it to sundown.

"If someone is looking for us," says Jack, "then they'll know to track. I'll go off on my own if you're scared, but I can't guarantee I'll get back here before you start feeling the dehydration."

"No." He stands up, more quickly than he would have thought himself capable of. "I'll go with you."

He's scared of going, he realizes, but nowhere near as scared as he is of finding himself alone.

Though I like reading first person perspectives, they don’t seem to exist in high numbers in the fan fiction realm. I suppose it depends on what fandom one is specifically browsing versus any particular advantage the websites (Ao3, FFNet, Tumblr) have established over one another?

Final Fantasy 15 has been translated into various languages, so I could be wrong about this, but Safe Heaven = Safe Haven. Cor, Ignis, and Prompto are missing-in-action. Gladiolus and Noctis can cope without them, but it sure is looking like it’s going to be a cold and dreary trek.
