Noctis/Any, Eat Spell

Like the Eat spell in Final Fantasy 8, Noctis can eat daemons for strength and power.

fill: the bad ending

he doesn’t mean to, is the thing. he can stop anytime, except not right this instant. not when he needs the strength, that extra little rush from hot live blood and the snap of magic he can feel to his fingertips.

the first time had been an accident. he’d just been so tired, so hungry, so frustrated with everything, but especially gladio getting in his face about ignis’ injury and the constant recriminations about him not having the stones to put the ring on. he’d stormed off ahead, ignoring prompto’s pleas for him to wait and gladio’s little snipe about the prince going it alone. fuck them. fuck everything.

the gurangatches catch him off guard, one of them getting in a good swipe before noct slams a sword in between its eyes and it goes down with a shriek. it hurts, but the pain’s good, it’s the first thing he’s been able to feel after luna’s death.

he doesn’t know what makes him think of it, what makes him reach out and phase his hand through the daemon’s chest until he’s gripping its heart, the whole thing like he’s half in a dream as he raises his hand to his mouth and takes a bite. he doesn’t come back to himself until after, when his hand is clean and he feels good in a way he hasn’t in weeks: full, satiated, content.

the next time hadn’t been an accident.

the others wouldn't understand, and tensions are already strained to the breaking point. he doesn't want to hear what gladio would say about his newfound habit of taking his meals raw.

so noct sneaks out alone after they've all fallen into an uneasy sleep, the future a looming uncertain spectre that creeps closer with each passing day.

he starts small, luring in a stray sabretusk that's wandered away from its herd, pinning it neatly with his broadsword before tearing its heart out. he can feel the strength fill him, the blood rich and bursting with life, his magic humming as if overfull, eager to be used. by the fifth night, he's digging bare hands into the chest of a behemoth he'd taken out with a single fire spell, and the taste of it is more decadent than the dessert that ignis has yet to perfect. for a short while, noctis feels like nothing can touch him, more powerful than the gods at his beck and call.

zegnautus keep is a desolate wasteland of the dead and dying and noct doesn't know how he'd have made it through ardyn’s little maze of horrors if he hadn't learned to consume daemons for sustenance. he tears through them with little consideration for niceties, crunching goblin bones between his teeth as he waits for the ghoul to take a few more steps forward and reaching.

he must look a mess, but,

‘oh noct’, ardyn just says. he sounds pleased. ‘do your little friends know?’

noct bares bloody teeth at him. the crystal is bright and shining behind him, and it hurts to look. he’d reached out a hand and begged it to banish the daemons, to bring the light back, but the only response he’d gotten was a deep aching burn across his palm where he’d touched the edge of it. he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to fucking do. no one had told him anything; not his father, not luna, not gentiana though she’d been happy to feed him endless scraps of cryptic bullshit when all he’d wanted was one clear direction.

perhaps surprisingly, arydyn is the only one who hasn’t lied to his face.

'what now,' he asks, though the real question might be what's left.

ardyn laughs, spreading his hands before him. 'i leave that to you, o king of kings.'
