Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto had faired far better to the news of the capitols fall than Noctis, it seemed. They were all stunned and shocked, yes. Noctis shut it away for a while, dared not to think of the details of what had happened. It was much easier to pretend nothing happened. They had all seemed pretty content just to forget. But how? How could they? It’s all Noctis could think about now.
He tried to brush it off, to lock it all away silently. Pretend that his entire existence hadn’t just been wiped away. Everything that he’d ever known, just vanished. That he had to face the facts, he was the King of a fallen kingdom now. Not just the Prince.
It had felt like forever since they had read that newspaper, since they had spoken to Cor. They made their way through the Crestholm Channels silently. They were looking for the headlight for the Regalia. It had been a long and tortuous dungeon so far. Nothing terribly exciting had happened, save for killing a few weaker deamons.
Noctis couldn’t shake this terrible feeling of dread since they’d entered the channels. He tried to brush it off, to just fight harder. Just focus. Nothing was wrong. He was fine. Totally fine. Not like the pressure of the entire world resting on your shoulders or anything.
He was breathing heavily through his nose, now. Fuck. He closed his eyes and counted. One, two, three…four. Just breathe, you’ve got this, he thought slowly trailing behind his friends. Fuck.
So far, his friends hadn’t seemed to notice his quiet withdrawal, thankfully. At least, they didn’t seem to publically acknowledge it. He had hoped after a while, it would have passed. But it just hadn’t. If anything, this horrible feeling had gotten worse.
His heart sped up and panic gripped him. He couldn’t stop. He was practically wheezing to catch his breath. He had to keep going, to keep moving. He stumbled with a strangled gasp. Fuck. He felt his world tilt, and he threw a hand to the wall to steady himself. This wasn’t good. The more he tried to steady his breathing, the worse it got.
Ignis was the first to turn, noticing Noctis was trailing behind. He had noticed Noctis acting different and he knew the Prince had to be upset about his father and the city. They hadn’t really had time to talk about it with how quickly they had been thrown into the mission.
Now, Ignis could clearly see that their Prince wasn’t taking it as well as they had all hoped. He was pale and gripping the wall for support, clearly unable to catch his breath.
“Noctis!” He called and rushed to his side. The others quickly followed suit as he heard Prompto gasp in shock and scramble behind him.
Prompto was confused and shaken at the sight of his best friend. Noctis wasn’t even aware that his friends were next to him. He was still breathing heavily, hyperventilating. He had gone cold, and his arms were tingling now. He brought his free hand to his throat, clawing viciously to free his airway.
“I-I…can’t do this” He wheezed. Prompto could hardly watch. “I can’t-” Noctis fell up against the wall, still standing. No one knew how to react, they were shocked. They just watched the poor broken man crumble to the side of the wall in agony.
He couldn’t get air. He needed to breathe. Something in Ignis snapped as he grabbed Noctis’s hand as the prince slowly slid to his knees against the side of the wall, Ignis fell heavily to the ground in front of him.
“Noctis, please, you need to breathe.” His eyes met Noctis’s unseeing ones “Count with me.”
He was delirious, could barely understand what was going on around him. Ignis made eye contact with Prompto as he lurched forward and grabbed Noctis’s other hand so he didn’t try anything stupid. They squeezed reassuringly, Prompto right next to him wiping away the sudden wetness from his face. He was crying? Since when?
Ignis counted slowly with Noctis as he tried to steady the Prince’s breathing, with a reassuring hand on his neck and Prompto’s hand on his back, rubbing circles. Gladio had stood behind Ignis awkwardly not sure how to react. He hadn’t seen Noctis so broken before, even in all the years he’s known them.
Once his breathing seemed to even out a little, the tears came full force. Instead of chocking breathes, it was full on sobs. He couldn’t catch a fucking break. It was heart wrenching to hear him like this. Noctis lurched forward to cling to Ignis as he reassuringly wrapped both arms across his back, wetness staining his shirt.
Prompto looked like he was going to cry just by looking at Noctis. He wasn’t sure why the Prince was so upset, but he kept his handing on his shoulders, rubbing, silently sniffling himself. He was pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in this group, as Gladio looked away from the sight of his Prince, his King.

It had honestly felt like eternity when Noctis’s breathing had begun to slow down to a somewhat normal pace and his sobs had lessened considerably. Ignis had assumed he had just tired himself out. Noctis still had felt worse than before.
Ignis tried to pull Noctis away to get a clear view of him. He was still deathly pale, shivering with red puffy eyes. It had been years since Ignis had seen him like this. Ignis’ eyes were full of his own sympathetic tears just looking at his Highness.
Prompto rose to his feet, trying to indicate to Ignis that they should probably find some safer ground to continue to. Ignis nodded, silently and slowly got to his feet, carefully righting the Prince in turn.
“Are you going to be okay, your highness? Ignis looked at him pointedly. “We need to get out of here, and then we can rest in Hammerhead, okay?” Noctis did nothing but nod, not really caring if he had gotten killed by a daemon at this point. Nothing mattered.
“Prompto, stick with Noct until we get the fuck out of here, you hear? I don’t want him doing anything stupid before we get out, ok?” The first words Gladiolus had said the whole time, determination clear from his voice. They just had to find the way out now.
Prompto nodded, fervently. He grabbed on to Noct’s elbow as they continued toward the exit. He was practically dragging him slowly. Ignis and Gladio stayed ahead and made a safe guard in case any daemons made their way through.
“Hey, Noct,” Prom started quietly. “you know, we’re here for you, no matter what.” Prompto squeezed his bicep reassuringly. “We’ll get out of here and help you save the world, and you can build your own Insomnia.”
He was king, that was right. He was king. Not his father. His home was gone. Destroyed. The people scattered. All of this. His father had done…just to save his son and friends?
“Noct, c’mon,” Prompto’s raised a little higher as Noct’s breathing hitched. again, Fuck, Prom had messed up this time. Prompto jerked as Noctis stopped like deadweight, eyes wild as he met Prompto’s eyes. This channel didn’t help the Prince’s anxiety. It was dark, dingy, cold and had a creepy atmosphere.
“I-I’m-“ Noctis’s eyes widened and he jerked his body to the side and doubled over into the wall as he vomited and coughed, gasping for breath. They had to get the Prince out of there fast, Prompto thought, as he waited for Noctis to finish.
Prompto was quick to wave down Gladio, who hadn’t even been paying attention to them, focusing on getting out of the channels before it got dark. Ignis had been lost in thought until he heard Noctis gasping for air. Gladio made one last frantic look around before he and Ignis ran back to the Prince.
He was even paler, if that was even possible. He heaved and emptied the contents of his stomach and lolled his head against Prompto, clearly exhausted. Gladio quickly grabbed Noctis, rather unforgivingly and let him rest his head against his chest. It was much quicker if they carried the Prince from here.
Once Gladio had picked up Noctis, they had quickly made their way out, as quiet as possible. Thankfully, they hadn’t encountered any monsters. They made it just before sunset it seemed. The sky was turning pink slowly, which meant they needed to book it if they were getting to Hammerhead on time.
