Prompto/Noctis - Pet Names

Noctis and Prompto using sickeningly sweet pet names (snuggle muffin, schnookums, etc) for each other that make Gladio and Iggy gag whenever they hear them.

Bonus for them not even actually being in a relationship; they just do it to fuck with them.

Actually platonic but just really schmoopy and comfortable buds mistaken for romantic couples is one of my favorite underused fic plots, so seconding!!!

Noctis couldn't remember when it started. At some point, he and Prompto thought it would be hilarious, and it had just built from there. What started as small one-off lines turned into full-blown flirtation that outsiders might think was real.

Perhaps it was the small, ever-patient sigh that Ignis would let out. More likely, it was the frustrated, almost pained groan that Gladio would give. Either way, in times of boredom, he and Prompto had come up with a unique way to amuse themselves and annoy others. And they occassionally used it as a means of getting revenge.

It was another late night. Instead of sleeping in a caravan or motel, Gladio had insisted they sleep out under the stars. For a while they amused themselves playing King's Knight, but that desire wore off quickly as they became too weary to concentrate on the game and too stubborn to go to sleep. Noctis got up to fetch himself and Prompto a drink, and as he walked behind the other boy it started.

"Here you go, Schnookums," he cooed in an overly flirtatious way, leaning over Prompto's Coleman chair to hand him the drink.

Prompto instantly joined the play, holding up the drink as if to make a toast. "Thanks, Honeymuffin."

He could already hear Gladio groaning. Good. He deserved it for dragging them out here. It just made Noctis play harder.

He rounded the chair to drop into it, comfortably squished against Prompto. Wrapping an arm around his shoulders, he leaned into Prompto.

"You always know how to treat me, Poopsie Woopsie." Prompto tapped a finger on Noctis' nose.

"Anything for you, my chocobean covered bagel."

There it was. That unmistakable, almost inaudible groan. Surely his suggestion had offended Ignis' palate, but the man was too courteous to ever say anything.

It was a competition to see who could come up with the worst pet name, and every time they were both determined to win. He never actually knew who won, but he always had fun.

Prompto's hand, cold from the chilly night air, touched his cheek. "You know I love it when you talk to me that way, Butterball." He was almost nose to nose with Noctis, closer than anyone else would ever get with him.

As much as he cared about Iggy and Gladio, they were both mentors to him. Prompto was different. He was the one true peer that Noctis had. The only person he had to be an unrepentant idiot with.

"You like when I call you Poopsy Doodles?" Noctis leaned in further, hot breath able to reach Prompto's face as he spoke in a husky voice.

"Oh," Prompto exhaled dramatically, "Pumpkin' Knickers..."

"You're the mystery meat in my sushi..."

"You're the cream in my bisque..."

Another louder groan as Gladio gave up. He got out of his chair and stretched before heading to his tent. Noctis knew better than to try and scare Ignis away - the man had the patience of a saint. But he wasn't trying to get to him anyway.

They playfully cooed sweet nothings at each other for a while longer, until finally they needed to give in to sleep. Ignis put away dishes and crawled into the tent with Gladio, and Noctis crawled in along with Prompto. He was thankful when it was zipped closed to block out the chill of the night, scooting up close to Prompto to share some warmth with him.

Lazily resting an arm over him, he looked at the back of Prompto's head in the dim light. With a smirk, he leaned close to his ear and whispered, "Chocobo butt."

Prompto snickered softly.
