(Anonymous) 2017-01-21 06:53 am (UTC)(link)“Squall, I’m worried about you—that meeting with Cid didn’t go well! Now that you’re in charge of Balamb Garden, you need to step up to the plate! Inspire the other students! Lead them!”
“Whatever.” Squall walks away.
Quistis tries to stop him but is waylaid by Trepies, allowing him to escape towards his quarters.
“Hey, guys! Sorry I’m so late, there was this huge line at—hey!” squawked Prompto, dropping the grocery bag of game night staples, “You started without me?! C’mon, guys, I said I’d be back in a few!”
Gladio snorted. “It’s not like you missed anything. I rolled a nat 1 trying to convince Noctis to put some of those shiny new points in diplomacy and the ice princess went to go nap again.”
Noctis swatted at him in playful annoyance, mumbling about character development. While they were engaged in the horseplay, Ignis made space for the late arrival, handing over his character sheet and custom figurine.
“As you came in late and nothing vital is currently happening with the rest of the party—“
Before he can reach his bed, Squall begins to feel drowsy. It’s all he can do to push himself to the side and slide safely down the wall. “Not again.”
Not far from him, Quistis falls into a dead faint. The Trepies are unable to catch her.
Glaring first at his DM and then at the innocuous dot staring up at him, Gladio muttered, “I swear these dice are rigged.
“Oh man, where do these guys keep coming from?”
Laguna shoots an Estharian soldier, managing to get a headshot with little effort.
However, quite a few more were waiting in the wings, replacing their fallen comrade immediately.
“Hey now, you don’t want to hurt little old me, do you?”
The soldiers exchange glances and lower their weapons slightly.
“That’s it, easy does it. I’m Laguna and I’m the, uh… leader of the resistance!”
They stare blankly.
“You know, the resistance? Against Adel? She’s one nasty customer, and she hurt my kids to boot! Mind helping a guy out? At least let me go so I can talk to my little Squall-y-talk-to-a-wall-y.”
“You guys are jerks,” said Noctis as Gladio and Prompto crowed at the sum total of his diplomacy check.
Even Ignis was hard put not to tease, remarking with deceptive mildness, “The judicious application of charisma can extricate one from many a tight spot.”
“Whatever,” he huffed back, “Maybe if he hadn’t put so many ranks in diplomacy he wouldn’t’ve gotten swept out to sea.”
“I think those two are right, Noct.” Gladio’s grin could be politely described as ‘shit-scarfing’. “If I’d just thought of ‘Squally-wally’, Quistis would’ve had him in the bag.” He sent a similar smirk Ignis’ way to remind him who the inspiration was for his character.
Ignis, of course, remained less than impressed, merely arching a brow and drawling, “Perhaps I should endeavor to train with whips. It might just keep you on your toes.”
The soldiers agree to join the resistance thanks to Laguna’s masterful persuasion.
“How romantic~!”
Without warning, Seifer returns after a long absence.
Prompto all but flung himself behind his friends as an unwelcome guest player intruded once more. For his part, Ardyn greeted them all in a friendly enough manner, rolling his own figurine—as well as a frankly ancient D20—onto the humble fireside table.
Noctis was already shaking his own. “Activating Greater Heroism—“
“—‘The Faeries Are Here’—“
He rolled his eyes. “—The Faeries Are Here, whatever you want to call it.” He managed to roll a 15 total, despite a negative bonus as per his nonexistent charisma score. “Laguna gains....” Sheets were rifled through and flung around. “…+3 on attack roles, saves, skill checks.”
“Thanks, Noct!” Pausing only for a fist bump, Prompto dove back into his seat under the amused gaze of the chancellor.
“Seifer, Ultimecia—“
“Character knowledge, Prompto.”
“—I mean, Edea, yeah, she’s pretty sketchy, you know? Go back to Balamb, Squall misses you!”
“Does he now? I’m touched, your majesty.”
“Prompto,” his majesty whined.
“And give up on my dream?”
Seifer draws his gunblade, only for it and him to distort and disappear into a sudden rift in reality.
“How rude of you.” It was unclear how much of Ardyn’s affrontedness was feigned, though he seemed unusually put out as he stared down the giant red stranger who had torn his way into their dimension.
“Eh?” The man(?) stepped fully out of the crack, peering at each of them in turn. “Wait, a big, strong guy like you—“ He stared at Gladio, then shifted his attention to Prompto. “You used to have one too! And more muscle. Might want to get checked out, it can’t be healthy!”
“I think you have the wrong guy…?” he suggested, disconcerted by the genuine—but confused—concern.
“Haha, maybe! After all, none of you seem struck by recognition, and who could forget Gilgamesh once they met him?!” Gilgamesh, as he identified himself, posed so bombastically that the tension couldn’t help but break. “Well, I’d love to cross swords, but since you don’t have any, it’s back to Excalibur-hunting for me!”
He’d barely sauntered back the way he came, portal closing up behind him, when Prompto turned to Ignis and begged, “I know I already have a few characters but—“
“DM character,” declared Ignis, already finished with the character sheet and making minor adjustments to his plot log. With the last few notes scribbled in, he flicked his eyes up to send his most dismissive glance over his glasses’ rim at Ardyn. “To continue to participate, you must have a new character already set up. House rules.”
Ardyn looked ready to argue until the other three simultaneously rolled checks for their occupied DM. “…Well. I wouldn’t dream of ignore a triple crit. I suppose I’ll show myself out then.”
There was silence as he did so.
Then, turning slowly back to his players, Ignis uttered the words that would make it all worth it.
“This calls for extra roleplay experience, don’t you think?”
