Fill - Power Ballad
(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)I know this prompt has already had some great fills but I really wanted to offer a different take on this since I had the pleasure of hearing both Noctis' English VA, Ray Chase, and Prompto's English VA, Robbie Daymond, sing in person. And I feel like it was a different experience than what the other Author Anons explored so I wanted to offer up my personal take. Also, this is inspired by my own experiences with the game, my roadtripping with friends, and my wish for this one song to have been included on the car playlist. Even if it kinda dissolves into old school song fic territory, I still enjoyed writing this little fill.)
“Noct, we really sho-” Ignis' second attempt at forcing the prince to pull over is met with a decisive hand motion and a low snort. No matter how good the advice, if his mind was made up, there was no changing it.
Eyes focused on the dark road ahead, Noctis assured them all, “It's not much longer until we're back to Longwythe and can crash in some real beds. And take real baths.” Which they all sorely required after traipsing about in a damned sewer. While they found the headlights Cindy wanted, she was going to rightfully give them hell for stinking up the Regalia afterward. Even the prince felt a little uncomfortable sitting in his father's precious car, boots soaked in questionable fluids and smelling like a frat house bathroom.
“And not like we can count on rain showers or lake baths out here in the desert,” Gladio pointed out, tugging on his already exceptionally tight tank top, now clinging all the closer while damp. “I'm with Noct on this one – motel all the way.”
With a perfectly practiced pout, Prompto piled on, “Come on, Iggy – you know you're just dying for some bubble bath action.” Before there could be a response, he quickly added, “And we've got you three to one, that's how democracy works.”
“Even in a monarchy, I suppose,” he finally relented, finding himself rather willing to exchange hard earned funds to feel properly human again. For Shiva's sake, he'd even gotten some of that... liquid in his hair, all of his careful hairspray handiwork washed out and now slicked back out of desperation not to get more on his face. Yes, a bath was a high priority at this point.
Glancing back at his miffed and malodorous passengers via the rear view mirror, Noctis asserted, “And I decree baths and beds for all tonight.” With a click of his fingers that rivaled his adviser's, he quickly delegated, “Prompto, we need some upbeat driving music if we're going to get there on time.”
Lighting up at the chance to be helpful, the gunner began shuffling through the playlist at rapid pace. “We've got a bunch of killer tunes on here – anything in particular you're looking for?”
“I know there's a lot of instrumental stuff on there,” Noct commented while taking a quick turn. “But is there anything I can sing along with? Helps to keep me alert.” An old trick he'd picked up on his occasions driving at night – a way to boost his spirit and his concentration.
Scrolling for a bit, Prompto's thumb landed on a familiar title from a few year's back. “Oh, here we go,” he beamed while hitting the play button. Immediately, they were surrounded by raucous guitar riffs and hard hitting drum beats, his foot tapping along instinctively.
The prince instantly picked up on the rhythm, letting the well-loved melody wash over him as he hit the gas pedal. That extra thrill of driving along to the rollicking, dreamlike lyrics only pushed him further to their goal. Letting the first verse and chorus play out, Noct jumped in on the second one as the swells of music faded to let the vocals take over -
The Avenger is roaming through,
Roaming through the land.
Ready for the clash,
For the lasting gash.
The Avenger.
His voice surged down lower than the song's own vocalist, the rough edges of it giving away to the sheer depth it was capable of. Strong and forceful, turning the simple rock song into a full-fledged power ballad as he bottomed out to the lower ends of his range. Noctis was so lost to the music that he didn't even notice the reactions of his companions – from Gladio blinking at force of his voice, to Ignis' eyebrows raised in surprise, to Prompto's hands fanned out in delight. As the song picked up into a duet, the blond was the only one brave enough to join and sing back-up -
Mothers kissing sons,
With a staff in hands.
The bride is shining,
When the groom is gold.
“Won't you let it go?” Prompto trilled along, doing his best to both keep up with the female vocalist and Noct's own performance. His own singing could pack a punch if he put the effort into it, but the prince easily over-powered him with his fierce, resonate voice. To the point that even Ignis and Gladio remained silent as the song built its way to the chorus -
Shining worship choked in a wave of silver.
The offering's grief for Deceiver's pride.
Salvation man is a cup of fire.
But hope is the star,
on a morning tide.
But as he gave an encouraging motion to his two retainers, Noct's smile and sheer conviction managed to convince them to join in on the chorus itself. Ignis' voice slotted itself between the prince's and Prompto's, surprisingly light even when rising in volume, his accent falling to the wayside as he picked up the lyrics. Gladio played to his strength and held his voice down low, letting the others shine as he filled in the deeper parts of their harmony -
The spirit is over town,
Waiting for me to hit the floor.
Blooming white sky for the voice of one calling tonight
Tonight fate is the red crown,
The red crown around your door.
Time is scattering the seeds of the morning daylight.
Speeding through the desert, the dusty wind at their back as the Regalia left a billowing trail in her wake, no daemons crept near as their voices carried out over the rocky terrain. Even the revving of the engine found its place within the song, twining its way in-between rock rhythms and throbbing bass lines -
The pilgrims are gathering and the marching band,
The marching band's howling.
Compassion is the flag a righteous man,
A righteous man will hold.
Oh yes, Noctis sang like an angel. But one needed to remember that the Holy Host of the Six also contained brave warriors whose sonorous voices pierced the heavens like sharpened spears, making the sinners shudder and the reverent fall to their knees.
(And that's what I got. If you didn't recognize the song via the lyrics, it is The Messenger off the Dissidia OST as preformed by Your Favorite Enemies ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMj7_HARRZI ). While I like the in-game variations, the bonus track version was far and away my favorite. I went with the second verse though since I felt that some the imagery fit better with FFXV.
Now, while I do have audio proof of Robbie Daymond's singing voice ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrgPiYLutuo ) and Adam Croasdell's singing voice ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGEr2hlJvhs )... I sadly can't find clips of Chris Parson or Ray Chase singing. So you will have to take my word for it that I have personally heard Ray Chase belt out that Luna is his final fantasy in his awesome power ballad singing voice and I can't picture Noct singing any other way now. Hope you liked it!)
