Chocobros, flu pandemic, cytokine storm

Diseases spread far and fast during wartime, and this is no exception. A nasty strain of influenza strikes Lucis while the bros are on their quest, and it's killing more previously-healthy young adults than anything else (cytokine storms will do that). Despite all efforts to avoid places the disease has struck, inevitably, one of the bros falls ill. The rest know that with so much time in close proximity, they're almost certain to catch it as well.

So here's four boys on the run, one extremely ill and the rest likely to follow. It's entirely possible one of them will die. Ouch.

My preference is that all the boys get seriously ill over time and that they all survive in the end. Romantic entanglements optional, OT4 and Promptis are my jam but any ship with the bros is fine.

Make the boys scared. Make them suffer.

I am super into this but my research seems to suggest that cytokine storms are usually fatal.....

OP: I'm happy to ditch the half-assed scientific explanation in the name of very-serious-but-nonfatal whump.

OP again: I love complications though. Dangerously high fevers (and febrile seizures!), pneumonia, sinus/ear infections, making preexisting stuff worse, yessssss
