Gladio is an Alpha, Ignis is an Omega, which makes them well suited for their posts. Alphas are large, aggressive, dedicated to their pups (or in this case, Noctis). Omegas are caring, detail oriented, sensitive. But because of society, Alphas are generally considered to be better on the field than Omegas, despite both of them having places in the military.
Cue the lineup for the roadtrip, in which Ignis' involvement is made known to everyone important. They generally don't agree that it'll be good to have an Omega like Ignis accompany the prince. Even a Beta like Prompto is better suited for the trip. Enter Gladio, who, despite previously having the same prejudices as everyone about Omegas, will stop at nothing for Ignis to be recognized as his equal on the field.
They can have an established relationship or just the beginnings of attraction, smut or no smut. Whichever is fine for me. Just give me Gladio believing with every ounce of his being that Ignis is just as capable as he is out there.
