Prompto thinks he’s normal for the longest time.

Well, not completely normal: there’s always the tattoo on his wrist, black lines he’s never to show anyone, ever. And, okay, when he’s younger he gets kind of designated the ‘weird kid’, mostly because that’s what happens when you’re fat and like things. But stuff like that, that happens to a lot of people, doesn’t it? Every class has a weird kid, and a lot of people have weird, harmless secrets. So he figures in the long run he’s perfectly normal.

He keeps being perfectly normal as he stops being the weird fat kid and starts being just a kid, as he gets used to hiding his tattoo without seeming to hide it, as he grows older and taller and more into himself. Things aren’t great, but they’re pretty good.

And then he makes friends with the Prince – with Noctis, and things are great.

Except, there’s one thing that’s kind of extra weird about him. Something not even his parents know.

He doesn’t want to have sex.

When he’s younger, he figures it’s just something that happens when you get older, that there’s a switch that flips during puberty or whatever that turns people from kids to adults. And when that doesn’t happen for him when it seems to for the other teenagers, well, he’s a late bloomer or something. There’s plenty of time.

Only that switch keeps not flipping, and Prompto starts to worry about it, because what if it means there’s something seriously wrong with him? What if his tattoo means he’s secretly a robot and can’t feel love? (It’s possible he’s been watching too many bad science fiction movies.) But he loves his parents, and he loves Noctis, and he even loves Noctis’s scary Citadel friends a little, so that can’t be it. He just loves them platonically. So it isn’t his feelings that are broken. It must be something else.

He discovers jerking off about when other guys do, he thinks, and it’s okay, if messy. Nothing to write home about, but he’s had worse stress relievers. He thinks he’s supposed to be more enthusiastic about it, but maybe people are just exaggerating when they talk about how great it is? It’s not the kind of thing he can just ask anyone, not even Noct. Best friends tell each other everything, but…maybe not that much everything.

There are still girls that make him feel some kind of way, pretty out-of-his-league girls whose hair frames their faces just right and who have a sense for color he’s envious of. He wants to take pictures of them (he doesn’t, though, because that’s Weird). But he doesn’t want to do…things with them, the way guys do in movies and TV. Maybe they’re just exaggerating for effect, like with jerking off? If that’s even a thing.

He gets worried enough to try Moogling it, but the results for every query he tries for “what if I don’t want sex” is all women’s magazines full of suggestions for what to do about the spark going out of a relationship, which is kind of the opposite of his problem. He doesn’t have either a spark or a relationship.

Then he thinks maybe he’s gay, maybe that’s why girls don’t do anything for him. Sure, guys have never really done anything for him either, but maybe he’s repressed? He’s not sure what repression feels like. It might have been happening all along.

To test, he starts looking at guys more, trying to notice them the way he’s tried to notice girls. It doesn’t work out. He should’ve known: he hangs around basically the three most attractive guys on Eos, objectively speaking, and if Noct’s eyes and Gladiolus’s muscles and Ignis’s hands haven’t done it for him, nothing will. Sure, he likes looking at them, likes hanging out with them, gets a little flutter in his stomach when they smile, but that’s just what wanting to be friends with someone is like. It doesn’t make anything happen in his pants. He tries thinking about them while he jerks off, just as an experiment, but it just makes him feel gross and disrespectful and not at all turned on. (Is thinking about people while you jerk off really a thing? There are so many things where he doesn’t even know if they’re real, whether he’s normal and everyone is just pretending or not.)

Desperate, he goes back to Moogle, and this time he hits paydirt. “Don’t like guys or girls” must be somehow subtly different from anything else he Moogled before, because the women’s health magazines don’t show up this time. Instead, the top hit is for something called “What is Asexuality”. The article looks promising – at least it’s not about spicing up your sex life – so Prompto clicks on it.

An hour and a half later, he finally pushes his chair back from his computer.

Well.

That’s a thing.

So it turns out everyone else isn’t pretending. He’s the weird one and always was. But at least he’s not the only one. And there’s a word for it! Asexuality. Asexual. Ace. He rolls the words around in his mouth, says them out loud into the silence of his bedroom just to hear them. They sound kind of clinical, but they’re real. He’s real.

Real, but incurably weird. So it’s got its pros and cons. He was kind of hoping – he doesn’t know what he was hoping. Maybe that there would be some way of fixing him, making him normal. That’s all he’s ever wanted, to be normal. And this is just one more way he can never have that.

On the other hand, he supposes it’s not normal to be best friends with the Crown Prince, so he thinks he can live with it.

I did a surprising amount of research for this, mostly on what Google results look like. Wow there are a lot of people out there dissatisfied with the sex they may or may not be having.

I realize this doesn't actually hit most of the prompt yet, but I WILL GET THERE! Eventually.

Oh my gosh this is so good! I'm really glad you're covering Prompto questioning his sexuality & no knowing what it was going on right off the bat because holy crap no one ever talked about ace being a thing.

I can't wait to read more! Your writing is lovely!
