Prompto was sent on a mission to get close to Prince Noctis.
Noctis only finds out about it once they're taken captive by the Empire after Insomnia falls.
Up to you whether Prompto feels bad about or regrets betraying them all or not. I just have an image in my head of Noctis behind bars turning his face away from Prompto so that his "friend" won't see how close he is to crying (and then bursting into tears in Gladio or Ignis' arms the moment Prompto leaves).
